My first friend lost to AIDS was Tracy. We met in Bachelor, but we could have easily meet on the streets, “en la esquina”, that we both loved. I made the quilt for her and showed it to her mother before delivering it to the foundation. Her mother cried and thought it was a beautiful tribute to her, I thought so too. Somehow, I felt I needed the mother’s approval, do not ask me why. I have no doubts that if Tracy was alive today she would still be my friend. She was one of those that you knew would be friends for life, at a time when you thought “friends for life” meant decades. Those decades were stolen, snatched from us, I still resent that. Cristina (Mami Ruddy’s daughter,) helped me do it, she did the drawings, I still treasure the picture I gave her to use as model. Ironically in a very short time, Cristina was gone too, and so many, too many dear, loved others. I never did another quilt again. (bottom panel on the right)
